Juror’s Statement

It is an honor to be asked to jury a show. I’ve never met a juror who did not take the enterprise seriously. Each artwork is the personal expression of an individual. When we, as creatives, choose to exhibit our work, we allow the viewer to see what we see and experience how we think and feel about the world around us.

As creatives, we all tend to hold our breath (just a little) whenever we open an email or check a link and scan down a  column of names to see if we’ve been accepted for a show. It’s a rite of passage, a part of the business.

If we want our work to be seen, we must submit our creation to a group or an individual juror before our work is accepted. We may develop a tougher skin over the years but it always matters, regardless of how long we’ve been exhibiting or how experienced we are.

Each juror is an individual as well, We come to the task with our own preferences, education and experience. Among a few elements that may be considered are: subject matter, use of media, style, color, composition, expression, and individuality, to name just a few.

Beyond a certain level of competency with the materials, and confident use of elements of color and composition, the things I value and look for are a unique and inventive vision, and the ability to evoke a sense of atmosphere or a feeling in the viewer. The artist should be able to make us care, to see what they see, to direct our eye, to surprise us, to make us see something new or see it in a new way.

As creatives, we are always growing and changing and learning new ways to do things. Every experience makes us better, stronger and more able to express ourselves. And for me, communication, our ability to express something to another, is key.
