Juror’s statement:

As an artist of many years, I’ve entered numerous juried shows.

Early on, I would ask myself why on earth did the juror select certain paintings that I considered unworthy.

In some cases, there was no evidence of technical skill, or any attempt to create what I would consider an attractive painting.

Sometimes an accepted or even prize winning painting might be one that I considered technically deficient,

even jarring or ugly in my opinion. So the question would come back: why was this painting chosen?

I’ve come to learn that many jurors are influenced by more than just technical skills.

For some the emotional factor of a work is more impactful than any other factor.

It’s easy to accept and award prizes to only technically well executed work, but that is also limiting.

In reviewing the work that was submitted for this juried show I found myself looking for some very specific things. I’ve listed these here.

1. Work that creates a strong sense of place.

2. Work that creates a mood, emotion or energy.

3. A unique or uncommon approach to a familiar subject.

4. An exciting use of color or bold design.

5. The telling of a story or idea.

I feel that these aspects of art are more important than technical proficiency

and I hope that this information may answer your questions about my choices.

As you look at the work in the show, I hope you can easily identify one or more of the criteria I used,

and that you find that the work represents a wide range of approaches to making art.

Suspend your quick judgement as to whether or not a work is “good art” and ask what the work is attempting to communicate.

I hope you enjoy the show.
